About Adolescent Hub Project

It is a school-based sexual and gender based violence prevention program targeted at adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19. The aim of this project is to provide adolescents with tools and information to understand the root cause of violence around them, to educate and involve their peers to prevent such violence, and to develop the act of speaking out.

An Initiative of Gender Mobile

Adolescent hub is a project of Gender mobile initiative, a non-governmental organization leveraging technology in the form of a 24/7 dedicated mobile telephone helpline (07000000002) and a web platform (gendermobile.org) to provide emergency response services.

Our Objectives are

F. F. is a 19 year old from Ekiti State. As a result of family neglect because of her gender, she had to engage in indiscriminate sexual relationships for monetary benefits, which had led to two unwanted pregnancies. An act which not only impacted on her health, but on her academics negatively.

T. M. is a17 year old brought up by a single parent, who separated due to domestic violence and neglect. An incident which has impacted gravely on her as she had also become a bully to other students. She is in the custody of her mother, who has no means of livelihood support.

A. A. is a 17 year old in the custody of a single parent, who had suffered sexual abuse from a neighbor. This act has been going on for years and has impaired her performance in school.

D. O. is a 17 year old who was always psychologically abused her mother. As a result of the abuse she experiences at home, she has become withdrawn in school while her grades have been dropping drastically due to lack of concentration in her classes. D. O. Is interested in learning a skill, to help her gain financial independence so as to end the abuse against her.

Pen for Innovation Challenge

This component of the adolescent Hub project engages adolescents to propose innovative traditional solutions to gender-based violence in their community . This is implemented on the strength of our partnership with Valiant Scribe and Penovate Concept.

Project Scope

Gender Mobile administers a module for 7 weeks in rural communities.

This exposes adolescents to information on gender based violence and identifying patterns of violence, demystifying harmful myths, exposing patterns of sexual harassment and it consequences, life skills for adolescents on assertive communication and negotiating skills, leadership and social responsibility. These modules are administered by volunteer facilitators trained by The Nigerian Girls Guide, Kids & Teens Resource Centre and other partner organizations, with support of The Pollination Project.

Our Activities

The Gender Mobile team visited 8 secondary schools in Gbonyin Local Government Area in Ekiti State, to carry out a baseline study using questionnaires as a tool on students between ages 12 -19 years prior to the commencement of the adolescent hub project. Analyzed data indicated the prevalence of violence and the need for an intervention to nip it in the bud.

A total of 55 facilitators were trained by the Nigeria Girls Guide and Kids & Teens Resource Centre. The first phase of the Adolescent Hub Project covered 7 secondary schools in 7 rural communities of Gbonyin Local Government Area of Ekiti State in South West Nigeria.
